Properly Preparing Wood Wicks: Why Soaking Them in Oil Can Improve Your Candles

In this article, you will learn why soaking wood wicks in oil can make a real difference when pouring candles, how the burning behavior changes, and what you should pay attention to during processing. Especially when pouring scented candles with wooden wicks, small details often determine a calm flame, a beautiful melt pool, and the overall burning experience. We will also show you how to achieve better results with high-quality wooden wicks and why our Hansawax wooden wicks are so popular with many candlemakers.
Why wooden wicks?
Wooden wicks create a special atmosphere in candles. The gentle crackle is reminiscent of a small fireplace and gives scented candles a high-quality and cozy effect. However, many people know the problem: the flame is too big, restless, or the wick is difficult to light. This is exactly where the correct preparation of the wooden wick can help.
Preparing wooden wicks

For our test, we used two identical XL wooden wicks. One remained untreated, while the other was soaked in oil for at least 25 hours. Both wicks were then placed in the same candle mixture. Soy wax 4130 and 5% of our fragrance oil "Peach Blossom" were used. After melting and carefully stirring in the fragrance oil, both candles were poured and fully cured.
A visible difference was already apparent during the preparation of the soaked version. The oil had penetrated deep into the wood and changed the appearance of the wick. Excess oil was carefully blotted off before pouring to ensure the candle could be processed cleanly.

The difference when burning the candles
The exciting part began when lighting the two candles. Both wooden wicks lit, but the soaked wick developed an even flame across the entire width of the wick much faster. The untreated wooden wick took longer and quickly showed a restless flame pattern.

Differences also became visible in further burning behavior. The untreated wooden wick continued to produce a larger and significantly more restless flame. At the same time, a stronger melt pool formed. While this may seem positive at first, it often leads to the candle burning too hot or being consumed more quickly. The soaked wooden wick, on the other hand, burned more calmly and controlled. The flame remained smaller, more even, and appeared more stable overall.
Especially with scented candles, controlled burning behavior is particularly important. A too large flame can cause fragrance oils to evaporate faster or the candle to burn unevenly. A calm flame, on the other hand, ensures a more pleasant burn and an even fragrance release.
Note: Wood is a natural product
Nevertheless, when working with wooden wicks, always remember: wood is a natural product. Therefore, not every wick can react exactly identically. Differences in grain, density, or material structure can affect burning behavior. This is precisely why testing is so important when pouring candles. Even small adjustments to the wax, fragrance oil, or wick size can have a big impact on the final result.
